Reducing Stress

Every individual has a threshold of “good” stress that enhances the mind and body to function at its best.  If we take on stress over and above this threshold it will cause the body and the mind to under- function.  On a simplistic bio-chemical level the muscles in the body tense up, reducing the blood circulation to the muscles themselves and limiting their absorption of nutrients.  The lack of nutrients absorbed by the muscles can lead to muscle-fatigue and make it more prone to physical injury.  Acupuncture increases microcirculation in peripheral tissue and in the brain thus aiding the reduction of muscle spasm, fatigue and injury.

Athletes utilise acupuncture to safely enhance their performance by increasing their energy levels and aid recovery from injury by tapping naturally into the body’s own healing process.  Hypertension (high blood pressure) can be linked to stress.  To relax muscles in the body, as well as, the heart, acupuncture can be used to treat simple hypertension by acting as a vasodilator thus, enabling it to reduce cardiac output and decrease blood pressure.  Patients often note the sedative effect of acupuncture after treatment; they feel more relaxed and report an increased sense of well- being and calmness.
